Statement

As a former early years teacher I find it an environment in which I work effectively and gain satisfaction. In 2000 I was inspired by the ‘Hundred Languages of Children’ exhibition from Italy. I felt an immediate connection with the children’s work and my own view of good art practice in which children’s ideas are taken genuinely and seriously by adults who are there to recognise and support children’s learning. Art lends itself to such an approach, to play, experiment, asking questions and decision making. After graduating I received a two year grant from North West Arts based at Drumcroon Education Art Centre, Wigan. I worked with all ages gaining a wide experience as an artist working in schools (with one residency at Foundation stage).

Since September 2002 I have been Drumcroon’s part-time gallery officer introducing children (including Foundation stage) to the changing exhibitions and doing workshops with them.

Processes:

1. Planning/fact finding Meeting with all staff involved. Gain staff commitment. Discuss flexibility of outcome, allowing children to take the lead, responding to their ideas. Resources – materials, staff, space and time available.
2. Event/activity planning – identify activities and children’s interests, resources needed, set up time-table.
3. Carrying out event/activity – interacting with environment. Responding to children’s ideas. Exploration, observation and discussion. Playing alongside the children and supporting their explorations. Introduction of my own skills.
4. Documenting the event – observation, listening and visual recording.
5. Evaluating the event – along with the staff to learn and develop.
