Statement

Tom Southerton is experienced in working with groups of all ages and abilities, delivering workshops in community, nursery, primary, secondary and adult education settings. Tom is a working musician in areas of performance, education and projects. He enjoys working with early years participants as they are really open minded and not so limited by form. Tom works with music styles from around the world at the same time, to reflect the international society that we live in. Through workshops he tries to encourage social and creative development by working with skills of interaction, listening, concentration, rhythm, intonation, improvisation, trust, memory, communication. Music workshops give the opportunity for participants to gain an experience of practical music making and have fun! A basic understanding of how rhythms work and how musical ideas are communicated are offered. Rhythmic patterns from West Africa, Asia, Europe, America, Latin America are used as a basis for compositions an improvisation. Musical ideas are translated from different cultures, heritages and instruments to form new music. The workshops involve methods of each of the learning preferences so that all participants have a chance to realise their creative potential. Workshops are tailored to needs of each group depending upon – age range, previous musical experience and context of workshop. One off sessions are accessible and work with games that develop group cohesion and fundamentals of music. Regular sessions will give participants the opportunity to work with concentration, expression and trust games that need group support. West African percussion instruments can be provided for fifteen participants.
