Statement

The Blahs are a theatre in education company so by definition we work in schools and create work for children and young people. Primary schools provide havens of safety for many children living in marginalised housing estates, which is where most of our work takes place. Primary education can allow children to learn together as a group before they become streamlined and put into their individual learning goals in secondary education. Drama encourages children to work together and learn from each other with the guidance of adults who continually push them beyond their comfort zone, which is where learning takes place. We use participatory theatre, based on techniques created by Dorothy Heathcote. The children help us make the drama by responding to actors who may be in a role as a character who needs their help or having watched a theatre scene which requires the children to intervene. We get the children involved in real moral dilemmas which require the children to look to themselves and each other for the answer and not to a teacher. We have just completed a three year project based on the story of Silas Marner in Richmond Hill Achievement Zone in Leeds.
