Statement

My name is Adrian Higgins and I am a Freelance Artist based in Hereford. I graduated in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University in 1990 and over the last 10 years I have pursued a career as a painter and printmaker. Over the last 5 years I have worked extensively in schools and the community where I have devised many arts based workshops aimed at extending a child's experience of art in an engaging and exciting way. I have participated in over 50 residencies and collaborative projects. I have experience working across all year groups from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 3. I also work with children who have special needs and children attending Pupil Referral Units. I have worked with the homeless and teenagers who have been drug dependent. I work nationwide. The workshops I offer: I specialise in printmaking and I offer a number of workshops that explore various techniques of printing. Printmaking remains a versatile and fascinating process. Children are able to fully explore their creativity whilst learning new and distinct techniques to express their ideas. I bring with me a portable etching press so a whole range of approaches can be introduced. Techniques include collographs, dry point etching, monoprinting and poly printing. All the processes are water based and non-toxic. I have established a successful mural business 'Artistic Interiors'. I have undertaken many commissions in both the private and public sectors and completed many collaborative projects with schools and colleges nationwide. I provide arts based workshops that explore various cultures through painting, drawing and performance. I have particular interest in Aboriginal art and culture I deliver workshops in Mosaic Art and Papier Mache My working practice; Foundation Stage: I take care to create a safe and supportive environment. I try to ensure that the workshops I offer will engage and extend the children's abilities. I liaise closely with the teacher from planning a workshop to its delivery. I believe this will ensure a more relevant and engaging piece of work. As the children develop their ideas I place emphasis on experimentation, exploration and the freedom to make decisions and test out ideas. I review the progress of the children's work at regular intervals encouraging the children to articulate their ideas and how they may develop them. I ask pupils to work both individually and in groups and encourage the children to participate in the creative process in all its forms. I make the aims and objectives of the workshop clear and reinforce these session by session. I am aware that in the case of Foundation Stage children it is important to place emphasis on process rather than product. I encourage children to investigate and communicate ideas across different areas of their creative development. I often utilise story telling as a starting point or combine visual arts with performance and dance.
