StatementMy background is in story-telling, performance, and creative writing – and I work as a theatre writer as well as a creative practitioner. I believe that theatre techniques have an extremely positive impact on children's creativity and communication. The emphasis of theatre is on team-work, creative collaboration, and risk taking. Theatre is about speaking in different languages - through light, sound, space and movement - all of which I believe are essential to young children's learning. My projects aim to allow children to make imaginative connections with the world around them, to create their own stories and to develop the confidence to pass those stories on. |
Experience ON-GOING: YOUNG PEOPLE’S PROJECTS LEADER, THE ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE, MANCHESTER . Based part-time in the Education Department, I devise and deliver a programme of workshops and projects aimed at allowing young people aged 5-25yrs to make the theatre their own. As part of this, I am responsible for the direction of the Young People’s Theatre Group (14-18yrs) and First Bite Theatre Group (11-14yrs), working with both groups to adapt, create, and perform new plays.
2008: CREATIVE PRACTITONER, SEFTON EARLY YEARS CHILDCARE QUALITY AND INCLUSION SERVICE I am about to emabrk on a project working in partnership with Litherland Moss Nursery, Sefton, to explore how creative ideas and activities can be used across all areas of early years learning. 2007-8: CREATIVE COLLABORATOR, CREATIVE COLLABORATION PROJECT, MANCHESTER EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP. I spent a year working in collaboration with Benchill Children’s Centre, Wythenshawe, working primarily with children aged 2-4yrs. Using role-play, story-telling and making activities, the project explored how the learning environment could best reflect and inspire the children’s, and staff’s, creativity.
2006-7: LEARNING TEAM, THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT, MANCHESTERMUSEUM. Freelance workshop leader, devising and delivering creative sessions to bring the Museum’s collections to life.
